The Contents of Pockets and the Consumer Insight Parallel

My fascination with consumer behavior and insights lead me to a Russian website (talk about a serious web spiral)

What intrigued me was the parallel between work that we do at Soulsight and this apparent art project. It's all about what's in a person's purse (or wallet or backpack)

I've said many times in this forum, that consumer's only know so much about themselves, and tend to reveal only half of that to us, so when we ask them direct questions about their purchase behavior, we can only take their word for so much.

What I find gets to the root of who they are, and what they are all about, much quicker is the contents of their carry.

What a person has on them, at that moment, unprepared and subconsciously collected tells me more about them in most cases than a Q&A survey. It always pleasantly surprises me when the straight laced banker fellow has guitar picks in his wallet or the friendly granny has a buck knife. It opens up quite a conversation when someone says "I don't buy mints" but then has three half peeled rolls of BreathSavers in their purse.

It goes well deeper than that of course. What they have on them, in what combinations, in conjunction with their responses and our assumptions, compiled with similar respondents provides a heck of a lot of data.

In the least, it's a fun game to play. Take a look at the site. Look at the photo of the person and see if you can guess 5 things that might be carrying. Many of them were designed by Soulsight!

Hint: One dude actually had a grenade on him! (gladly not designed by Soulsight :)
