How a Spy Store (and creative writing programs) might Save the World

Trust me, this isn't some high and mighty "we're the 29%!!" type of article. But it is about helping kids through creative writing programs.

In this day and age where schools are fighting for every dollar of their budget more than ever, it always seems that our beloved arts programs get the gas pipe. I get it, I really do. No one can cure cancer with a conté crayon but there are countless, documented studies that highlight the benefits to students who have the opportunity to participate in arts programs. The self-esteem boost a youngster might get from a creative outlet might lead her to be the best cancer fighter in the history of the world. Yes, I know, as always, hyperbole rich, but it's not out of the realm of possibility right?

826CHI (part of the 826 National Tutoring workshops) is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Their services are structured around the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention, and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success.

With this in mind, they provide drop-in tutoring, after-school workshops, in-schools tutoring, help for English language learners, and assistance with student publications. All of their programs are challenging and enjoyable, and ultimately strengthen each student’s power to express ideas effectively, creatively, confidently, and in his or her individual voice.

But that’s really not even the coolest part!

826CHI shares its space with the Boring Store, Chicago’s only undercover secret agent supply store. The Boring Store outfits its “Spy-entele” with the latest and greatest in espionagical wares. If you’re lucky enough to be in our fair city, visit them in Wicker Park and pick up a fresh grappling hook, carrier pigeon, envelope X-ray spray, hollowed-out can of shaving cream, or weather-resistant notebook. All funds raised through the store go to support 826CHI’s free programming!
